The Wilson Center, in partnership with the Europa Institute at the University of Zurich (EIZ), is pleased to announce the launch of a Short-Term Research Fellowship Program geared towards academics in the humanities and social science, who currently reside in Switzerland. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to spend four months at the Wilson Center conducting independent, advanced research.
The Global Europe Program is now accepting applications for the summer research grant competition. This stipend is available to American academic experts and practitioners, including advanced graduate students, engaged in specialized research requiring access to Washington, DC and its research institutions. The grant is for a period of two months, and includes residence at the Wilson Center. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, in order to be considered eligible for this grant opportunity. The deadline for applying is March 1, 2014.

Twenty thousand girls under the age of 18 give birth every day, and 90 percent of these births occur within the context of marriage, according to the UN Population Fund’s latest State of the World Population report. This year’s edition, launched at the Wilson Center on October 30, focuses on adolescent pregnancy and finding ways to better protect this vulnerable group of young women.

Next year, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), adopted by the United Nations after the Millennium Declaration, are set to expire. As they wind down, the global development community is taking stock. While there have been great strides toward accomplishing many of the goals set forth in 2000, there has been little headway in ensuring environmental sustainability, said Melinda Kimble, senior vice president of the United Nations Foundation. Which raises the question: What should change for the next set of global development goals, which are supposed to be even more environmentally focused – the “Sustainable Development Goals?”

Education in the Wake of Natural Disaster examines the successes and challenges of education reform in Haiti, before and after the earthquake that devastated the nation in 2010. Using two examples of success in systems impacted by natural disasters: post-earthquake Chile and post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans; Paul Vallas and Tressa Pankovits explore how lessons learned could be adapted and emulated in a country like Haiti that is desperate for reform, with over 50 percent of its population under the age of 18.
