Schaefer discussed the links between the North Korean security service and the East German Stasi in the 1980s, particularly in preparations for the Pyongyang World Festival of Youth and Students in 1989. He also commented on the anti-reform attitude that existed in both regimes, and drew lessons for North Korea gleaned from the collapse of the GDR.

Dr. Bernd Schaefer is Cold War International History Project Senior Research Scholar. Previously he was a research fellow at the German Historical Institute in Washington D.C. and the Hannah Arendt Institute at the Technical University of Dresden. He also served four years as secretary for the East German Catholic Church's Stasi lustration commission in Berlin.
