Washington, DC – Today the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars announced the appointment of Dr. Luis Rubio as a Global Fellow with the Mexico Institute. Rubio will work closely with the Mexico Institute  on issues of economic competitiveness and Mexican politics. Luis Rubio joins David A. Shirk as the second Global Fellow working with the Mexico Institute.

“Luis brings with him a deep understanding of the Mexican economy and society which will help ensure that our work continues to address the hard issues facing Mexico” said Duncan Wood, Director of the Mexico Institute.

The Global Fellows program seeks to strengthen the Wilson Center’s global network of thought-leaders who can produce research, timely analysis, and new ideas to amplify the mission and goals of the Center. These non-residential fellows will contribute to the ongoing work of the Center’s programs and serve as an integral part of the overall intellectual community of the Wilson Center.

Wood added, “As a trusted academic Luis is able to present critical analysis of the U.S.- Mexico economic relationship that serves to build bridges rather than deepen divisions, and helps to drive cooperation and understanding forward.”

Dr. Rubio is Chairman of the Center of Research for Development (CIDAC) an independent research institution devoted to the study of economic and public policy issues. Rubio has an extensive history of collaborative projects with the Mexico Institute. In 2012, Rubio co-authored a publication with Luis de la Calle titled Mexico: A Middle Class Society, Poor No More, Developed Not Yet which examines recent changes in Mexico that have helped the country transition to a majority middle class society. More recently, his book Mexico Matters: Change in Mexico and Its Impact Upon the United Statesargues that Mexico is of vital importance to the future of the U.S. As a result, an in-depth understanding of Mexico will be critical to a strong and prosperous United States. Rubio will discuss the current state of the Mexican economy with a panel of leading thinkers during the event “Mexico Today: The Growth Challenge” on Tuesday, June 17th at the Wilson Center.
