De todas maneras, el tema de seguridad no se puede obviar pero, igual, no se esperan grandes resultados. Tampoco hay perspectivas de que los logros tras la reunión sean alentadores.

La directora del programa Latinoamericano del centro de estudios Wilson Center, Cynthia Arnson, prevé que al final de la gira del presidente Obama "no estoy segura que además de que Estados Unidos exprese su profunda preocupación sobre el deterioro en la región, haya mucho más que esperar".

Según un informe de 2011 de la oficina de Naciones Unidas contra la Droga y el Delito, Centroamérica es la segunda región del mundo, después del sur de África, con las más altas tasas de homicidio. En promedio, el istmo tiene una tasa de 25 muertos por cada 100,000 habitantes.

Países como Honduras tienen una tasa de 86 homicidios por cada 100.000 habitantes, según el Observatorio de la Violencia de la Universidad Nacional.
