En este rifirrafe demasiada información se mezcla y muchos los intereses que se ventilan enturbiando todo. El informe "Irán en América Latina: amenaza o eje de molestia?" del Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars aporta antecedentes y contexto para comprender las relaciones de la República Islámica con Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela y Nicaragua mientras identifica los objetivos de política exterior y las estrategias emprendidas para arrojar alguna luz a cerca de los intereses que les vincula.

En los últimos años alrededor de 250 acuerdos se han celebrado entre dichos actores, muchos en materia económica y militar. Este informe señala como elemento cohesionador el espíritu antiimperialista compartido. También el interés de Brasil por despuntar en el escenario internacional, una mayor independencia en política exterior y la diversificación de los socios a nivel mundial.
