Chile firmó un tratado de libre comercio con Estados Unidos en 2004, y además mantiene acuerdos con los estados de California (oeste) y Massachusetts (noreste), entre otras cosas, sobre tecnología y biotecnología.

Así que esta visita "va más en el sentido de enfatizar la importancia de las relaciones bilaterales para expandirlas hacia otras áreas de cooperación como educación, ciencia y tecnología, más allá del comercio", dijo a la AFP Cynthia Arnson, directora del programa de América Latina del Wilson Center, un centro de estudios en Washington.

Los mandatarios avanzaron en la inclusión de Chile al programa estadounidense de exención de visas de turistas, que podría hacerse efectivo en 2014, luego de que Santiago realice mejoras de seguridad a los pasaportes chilenos.
