Op-ed: Re-launching the bilateral agenda - Mexico Institute in the News (In Spanish)

Secretary of the Interior Miguel Angel Osorio Chong delivered a conference at the Wilson Center's Mexico Institute. His visit coincided with the launch of the Gang of Eight's immigration reform bill.

El Secretario de Gobernación Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong dictó una conferencia en el Centro Woodrow Wilson el jueves para dar sus puntos de vista sobre los cambios que se están dando en México, así como la agenda bilateral con el gobierno de Estados Unidos. Su visita a Washington, DC coincidió, por casualidad, con el lanzamiento de la propuesta de reforma migratoria por parte de ocho senadores norteamericanos, tema que abordó como un avance alentador pero en que el gobierno mexicano no quería entrometerse directamente por tratarse de un asunto de soberanía nacional.

Dos temas quedaron claros. Los avances legislativos en México, producto del Pacto entre partidos, le da al gobierno mexicano un nivel de confianza y margen de acción frente al gobierno de Estados Uniods en la relación binacional que no ha tenido desde hace tiempo, y el Secretario dedicó parte de su discurso a los logros del Pacto. La percepción de que México está creciendo y avanzando, contrasta con la conflictividad y estancamiento en el sistema político norteamericano. Osorio Chong expresó su esperanza de que las elecciones que vienen próximamente en México no rompan el acuerdo entre líderes políticos.
