Introduction
Among the many changes brought about by the ongoing Arab Spring is the rise to prominence of Islamist politics. As secular dictatorships fall, religious conservatism is gaining strength and consolidating itself in positions of political power. To help us better understand this new dynamic, Wilson Center Distinguished Scholar Robin Wright has brought together an impressive group of contributors to create a just released book, The Islamists Are Coming. It’s the first book to survey the rise of Islamist groups in the wake of the Arab Spring, exploring what it means for the region and how Islamist politics differ from country to country. To learn more about this vitally important topic, we spoke with Robin, who is both a contributor to the book and its editor, and also with one of the featured authors, Samer Shehata.
