Rigoberta and the General

July 9, 2011

David Stoll is Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at Middlebury College, Vermont and former Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

The paths of a cultural anthropologist and a Nobel Laureate are not very likely to cross, much less conflict in most circumstances. But they did when scholar David Stoll questioned aspects of the autobiography of Guatemalan political activist, Rigoberta Menchu. The story has continuing repercussions. It also raises important questions about the meaning of scholarly integrity and political responsibility. David Stoll provides his account.
