Trade and Poverty

Feb 25, 2008 to Mar 02, 2008

John Sewell, Senior Scholar, Woodrow Wilson Center and Alan Winters, Director, Development Research Group, The World Bank

As globalization proceeds apace the effect of world trade on global poverty is much debated. As the current "Doha round" of trade negotiations goes forth, many developing nations are insisting that poverty relief be a principal goal. The liberalization of trade patterns is a complex undertaking and the predictable impact on the world's poor is rarely direct or immediate. John Sewell and Alan Winters join forces to explain both the magnitude of poverty worldwide and the ways in which trade can help alleviate it.
