Overview

The Canada Institute was pleased to host a discussion with Quebec’s Minister for International Relations and La Francophonie Christine St-Pierre, moderated by Canada Institute Director David Biette. Minister St-Pierre discussed the ways that Quebec will enhance its presence in the United States, and throughout North America, by emphasizing its enthusiasm for continental and global trade. She also highlighted the skills that Quebec’s multi-lingual workforce has at its disposal—helpful for navigating in an increasingly globalized economy; education will continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring Quebec’s continued success in creating and maintaining a versatile and valuable labor pool. When asked about Quebec’s stance on NAFTA, the minister cited Bombardier as a great example of success as its accomplishments have shown what industry can do when it harnesses the skills, labor, and technology from all of North America. In addition to discussing Quebec’s role in enhancing North American competitiveness, Minister St-Pierre noted that she had already met with Ontario’s Premier Kathleen Wynne and was looking forward to promoting intra-provincial cooperation in the future.

Turning to infrastructure, Minister St-Pierre stressed the need for collaboration between industry and government and that any future investment must increase access to the northern reaches of the province. Quebec’s Delegate General in New York, Jean-Claude Lauzon, offered several comments as well, noting the increased interest in investment in Quebec from U.S. and global funds and investment banks due to the relative weakness of the Canadian dollar. Finally, Minister St-Pierre concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining French language training in Quebec for both cultural and business reasons.
