Overview

Lt. General (retired) Javed Ashraf Qazi was appointed Pakistan's Minister of Education in September 2004. In 2002, he was elected as a member of the Senate of Pakistan, and subsequently served as chairman of the Senate Standing Committee for Defence, Defence Production and Aviation. During his 34-year career in the army, he served as Director General of both Military Intelligence and Inter-Services Intelligence. After his retirement from the army in 1996, he was appointed to several important positions in the government, including Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology; Federal Secretary and Chairman of Pakistan Railways; and Federal Minister for Communications and Railways.

Minister Javed Ashraf discussed the challenges facing Pakistan's educational system and how the government is addressing these issues.
