The Gingrich Senators: The Roots of Partisan Warfare in Congress

The much venerated Senate of the mid-twentieth century is now a distant memory. Today senators routinely electioneer on the Senate floor, play games with the legislative process, and question each other’s motives. Sean M. Theriault documents how one group of senators has been at the forefront of the transformation—the “Gingrich Senators,” which he defines as those Republicans who previously served in the House after New Gingrich was first elected. He shows how the Gingrich Senators are more conservative and more likely to engage in partisan warfare than the other Republicans.
Drug Policy: A 21st Century Approach to Reform

While efforts to disrupt the cultivation, processing, and trafficking of drugs to the United States have shown mixed results, the drug trade continues to pose serious threats to citizen security, economic prosperity, environmental conservation, human rights, and democratic governance throughout the hemisphere. In this National Conversation, panelists will address the question of how the U.S. is reforming its policies to address this problem and show sustainable results.

On April 16, 2013, the Canada Institute hosted its fourteenth Cross-Border Forum on Energy Issues. This year’s program, “Cyber Security and the North American Electric Grid” assembled key stakeholders, academics, and government policy makers for an off-the-record discussion on the vital but potentially vulnerable electric grid shared by Canada and the United States. The assembled participants concluded that despite decades of cooperation more must be done to confront emerging cyber security issues in the energy sector.

Over 260 watersheds are shared by two or more states, and 40 percent of the world’s population shares critical water supplies with another country. Although the world has largely avoided conflict over water, increasing population, economic, and climate change pressures could increase tensions over these shared resources making multi-country cooperation on water all the more essential.

An outgrowth of Students for a Democratic Society, Weather was active in 1969 through the 1970s. Arthur Eckstein will argue that this is misleading and that the true history of Weather is much grimmer and more ambiguous.
