The Wilson Legacy has been established to honor friends of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars who provide for the Wilson Center through their planned and estate gifts. While gifts to the Center’s annual fund provide important support for the operating budget, planned and deferred gifts, such as charitable bequests, life-income gifts, and charitable trusts, help provide a sound financial foundation for the Wilson Center’s future. You can support the Wilson Center and its mission in many ways.
Support the Center
The Wilson Center relies on the support of people like you, who value our nonpartisan research and recognize how investing in a public institution can yield a valuable return in advancing the dialogue of democracy and furthering our understanding and knowledge of the difficult issues of the day.
You can support the Wilson Center and its mission in many ways, helping meet the almost 60 percent of our annual operating budget that must be raised through gifts, grants, and endowment income. Gifts may be unrestricted or designated for a particular purpose, and may range from cash gifts and pledges to appreciated stock and planned gifts. Although the Center is not in the position to offer financial or legal advice, we will be happy to assist you in any way that we can.
Ways of Contributing
The Wilson Center is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, and all contributions are tax deductible. If you would like to make a contribution in support of our work, you may do so in several ways.
Bequests
A simple yet powerful way to support the Wilson Center is to remember the Center in your will or revocable trust. A bequest in a donor’s will can be specified as a fixed dollar amount, a percentage of one’s estate, the residual after gifts to heirs, or specific items such as real estate, artworks, or stock. Each bequest should be designed to fit the donor’s personal estate plans and charitable goals. It is important to remember that a bequest may be fully deductible for estate tax purposes, resulting in significant federal estate tax savings.
Charitable trusts and charitable gift annuities Among the ways of making gifts are techniques that allow an individual to retain lifetime income from assets given, while the principal eventually benefits the institution. For a transfer of assets such as cash, stock, bonds, or real estate, the Wilson Center will guarantee a lifetime income to the donor. The donor earns a sizable charitable deduction at the time of the gift, and may significantly reduce capital gains tax when the gift is funded with appreciated assets. Donors may also enjoy additional benefits.
Gifts of Securities or Appreciated Property
The IRS provides generous incentives for charitable gifts in many forms. Donating long-term appreciated assets allows the donor to avoid capital gains taxes and to claim a charitable income tax deduction based on the full, fair-market value of the gift. Gifts of stocks, bonds, and certain real property can provide valuable benefits to the Wilson Center. For additional information about this type of gift or to notify the Center of a transfer of property, please contact the Wilson Center’s Development Office.
To make a gift of stock through a DTC (electronic) transfer, your broker may transfer the shares directly to the Wilson Center’s account. Please contact development@wilsoncenter.org for wiring instructions.
Endowment
Building the Wilson Center’s endowment is critical to ensuring that the Center has a strong financial base from which to carry out its mission in the future. The Development Office would be happy to discuss endowment gifts and possible naming opportunities.
Unrestricted/Restricted Gifts
Gifts that are not designated for a particular program or activity help ensure the future vitality of the Center. Unrestricted gifts provide the funds to test new ideas for areas of research and study, as well as help cover the Center’s basic operating costs.
Gifts may be directed to a specific program, activity, or Center-identified need of interest to the donor. For additional information on funding needs, please contact development@wilsoncenter.org.
Gifts in Kind
Gifts in Kind provide needed materials and products for the Center’s operations. Examples include a piece of art, audio-visual and computer equipment, and rare books. If you are considering making a gift in kind, please contact the Development Office to determine the Center’s ability to accept and productively use the object(s).
