Climate Change and Energy
Perhaps no country besides the United States will have greater
impact on global energy strategies in the coming years than the People’s
Republic of China (PRC). The world’s most populous nation already emits more greenhouse gases than any country and consumes more energy than any but the United States.
Environmental Health
With support from the U.S. Agency for International Development, the China Environment Forum (CEF) is working with Western Kentucky University (WKU) on a new China Environmental Health Project (CEHP). In addition to working with WKU and Chinese scientists, under CEHP, CEF has created a new section on its webpage devoted to exploring China’s growing environmental health challenges stemming from pollution of air, water, and soil, as well as tracking policy changes, research, projects, and activism around environmental health issues.
Environmental NGOs, Public Participation, and Governance
In reaction to daunting environmental problems, the Chinese government has been introducing increasingly progressive environmental laws, welcoming assistance from international organizations, and opening up political space for Chinese environmental NGOs.
Water
Perhaps the number one growth constraint, water shortages threaten China’s ability to feed itself, create millions of environmental refugees, and threaten hydroelectric output.
