Summer 2014 Communications/Social Media Internship with the Africa Program

The Africa Program is seeking qualified applicants for Communications & Social Media internship positions in Washington, D.C.
Interns will assist program staff in its outreach and communication strategies, social media development and web management; they will also be
paired with incoming Southern Voices African scholars.

Internship Description

Interns will be assigned to work with the Africa Program and Project on Leadership and Building State Capacity Staff in support of project
activities for a maximum of 30 hours per week.

Duties will include:

  • Managing new blog, Africa Up Close, including uploading new posts, adding hyperlinks, liaising with contributors and internal web team, maintaining a post schedule, and troubleshooting issues when necessary;
  • assisting assigned Southern Voices scholar with research, scheduling meetings in and around Washington, DC, and planning events featuringtheir work while at the Wilson Center;
  • staying on top of trending topics related to Africa and authoring short posts on blog;
  • taking lead on social media promotion and announcements for events and publications, including the program websites, Facebook and Twitter;
  • proofreading and editing written work;
  • assisting in managing and updating program database;
  • helping with office reception duties, including telephone, greeting visitors, and mail sorting and distribution; and
  • preparing Leadership Project materials and publications.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Interns must have an interest in Africa and African-related issues, preferably with a secondary interest in peacebuilding and statebuilding. Interns should also have some academic or experiential background related to this topic.
  • He/she should have computer skills on a variety of software platforms, including Wordpress, HTML basic coding, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Suite, and experience with social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter.
  • French language oral and written fluency is desirable.
  • Good organizational and research skills, and an enthusiastic, responsible approach to unsupervised work are strong assets.
  • MA candidates encouraged to apply; however, applicants who have just completed a BA or are in their senior undergraduate year may also be considered.

Internship Dates

This internship will take place from May through August, 2014. Exact start and end dates to be determined. This internship is unpaid. The Woodrow Wilson Center is located in downtown Washington, D.C., in the Ronald Reagan Building/International Trade
Center (Federal Triangle Metro stop).
