Eastern Mediterranean Security Conference

First in a series of conferences, hosted by the Western Policy Center and the National Defense University , to discuss bilateral, regional, and transnational issues affecting NATO allies Greece and Turkey. The conference involves senior-level retired officers from the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS) and the Turkish General Staff (TGS). Joining Project Managers Stephen Norton, WPC Senior Policy Advisor, and Judith Yaphe, NDU Senior Analyst, for the conference are U.S. Army Secretary Louis Caldera; U.S. Air Force Gen. Richard Myers, the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Gen. George Joulwan, former Supreme Allied Commander Europe; Adm. Paul Gaffney, the president of NDU; and several active and retired officers from the United States and Canada. Diplomatic officials, including Turkey's Ambassador to the United States Baki Ilkin and Alexis Christopoulos, deputy chief of mission at the Greek Embassy in Washington, attended the opening of the meeting.
