NPIHP’s partners at the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses and the Indian Pugwash Society will host a lecture on "The Evolution of India’s Nuclear Program: Reminisces of the Early Years" with prominent physicist and nuclear policy advisor Prof. M.G.K. Menon, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization, and former director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
The Woodrow Wilson Center, the Ratiu Center for Democracy, and the Ratiu Family Charitable Foundation, are pleased to announce that Eleonora Cercavschi is the 2008 Recipient of the Ion Ratiu Democracy Award. Mrs. Cercavschi is the principal of Stefan the Great High School (Stefan Cel Mare Si Sfint Lyceum) in Grigoriopol, Moldova. The award will be presented at the Woodrow Wilson Center on December 4, 2008, during the Ion Ratiu Democracy Lecture.
In CWIHP Working Paper No. 67, "Ambivalent Alliance: Chinese Policy towards Indonesia, 1960-1965," Taomo Zhou argues that China and Indonesia enjoyed a remarkably cordial quasi-alliance with one another during the first half of the 1960s, and yet the relationship was beset by domestic social resistance, exemplified by two waves of anti-Chinese protests in Indonesia. Filling in the gaps in this important but understudied period, Zhou challenges the existing nation-state-centered narratives of China’s Cold War experience by combining top-down geopolitical analysis with bottom-up processes, and tracing diplomacy in practice and migration on the ground.
European Studies is now accepting applications for two of its research grants - the short-term research grant and the summer research grant. Both stipends are available to American academic experts and practitioners, including advanced graduate students, engaged in specialized research requiring access to Washington, DC and its research institutions. Grants are for one and two months respectively, and include residence at the Wilson Center. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, in order to be considered eligible for this grant opportunity. The deadline for applying for both grans is March 1, 2013.
