For the previous two and a half years, Klaus Larres was a distinguished visiting scholar at the Library of Congress, a visiting professor at Yale University and a visiting professor and senior fellow at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC. Most of his academic career was spent in the UK where he held professorships at Queen’s University Belfast, London University (Royal Holloway) and the University of Ulster. In 2002-03 Klaus held the Henry A Kissinger Chair in Foreign Policy and International Relations at the Library of Congress in DC.

Klaus has published widely on transatlantic relations during the Cold War and the post-Cold War years, His works also discuss European integration and British, American, and German foreign policy issues. Klaus was educated at Cologne University in Germany and the LSE in Britain.

Project Summary

While at the Wilson Center, Klaus focuses on the last two to three chapters of his project entitled "Enlightened Self-Interest? The United States and the Unity of Europe from Nixon and Kissinger to Obama." These final chapters will deal with transatlantic relations in the post-1990 years from Clinton to Obama, including the post-Maastricht developments, NATO expansion, and the Euro crisis.
