Lauren Herzer is a program associate in the Environmental Change and Security Program and the Global Health Initiative at the Woodrow Wilson Center. Prior to serving at the Wilson Center, Lauren completed a Masters degree in Environmental Security and Peace at the United Nations mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica. From 2003 to 2005, Lauren worked as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria where she taught English in a local elementary school, worked with a group of colleagues to develop a leadership camp for teenage Bulgarian boys, and served on a committee of volunteers overseeing small grant proposal applications. Lauren also served as a Crisis Corps volunteer with the Peace Corps and FEMA in New Orleans directly following Hurricane Katrina. She has a BA in History from UCLA.

Changing Cities: Climate, Youth, and Land Markets in Urban Areas
Aug 29, 2012Recognizing a need to strengthen the ties between urban policymaking and scholarly work on urban development, and to disseminate evidence-based programming, the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Comparative Urban Studies Project, USAID’s Urban Programs Team, the International Housing Coalition, Cities Alliance, and the World Bank came together in 2010 to co-sponsor an academic paper competition for graduate students studying urban issues.
The success of the 2010 competition led to the expansion of the competition in 2011 and publication of the top papers. In this third year, the focus is on three topics: climate change, youth, and land markets. A panel of urban experts representing the sponsoring institutions reviewed over 70 abstract submissions, from which 15 were invited to write full-length papers. Of these, eight were selected for this publication. more
After the Disaster: Rebuilding Communities
Mar 29, 2012This report draws from the dialogue and seminar papers shared at an April 2011 meeting co-hosted by the Wilson Center and the Fetzer Institute to explore how best to respond to disasters. Highlighting the complex nature of disaster response and exploring ways to overcome the inherent tension between those responding to disasters and the local community, the discussion centered on how to identify the strengths of a community and use technology to better engage the local community and provide effective, sustainable relief. more
Reducing Urban Poverty: A New Generation of Ideas
Nov 01, 2011Recognizing a need to develop and strengthen urban-focused practitioner and policymaking ties with academia, and disseminate evidence-based development programming, CUSP, USAID's Urban Programs Team, the International Housing Coalition, the World Bank, and Cities Alliance teamed up to co-sponsor a second academic paper competition for graduate students studying urban issues. Six winning papers were selected for this publication to highlight the new research and innovative thinking of the next generation of urban planners, practitioners, and policymakers. more
Our Shared Future: Environmental Pathways to Peace
Aug 25, 2011This report draws from the dialogue and seminar papers shared at a January 2010 meeting co-hosted by the Wilson Center and the Fetzer Institute to explore the affect of globalization on natural resource issues such as water on local, national, and international levels. Examining the effect of environmental peacebuilding on communities, the discussion explored how governments, NGOs, the private sector, and other interested parties can generate positive outcomes while minimizing negative ones. more
