Project Summary

A comparative analysis of the mythological structure and the conditions of production/reception of American and Soviet films of the 1930s and 1940s, addressing the bipolar functions of mass-culture and totalitarian culture in the twentieth century. Focuses on the examination and interpretation of themes and tropes, situating them in the context of the Soviet system of state command and the market-oriented genres of Hollywood.
