Biography of Alexander II in terms of the impact of his reign upon Russian society and politics. Restores credit for his great reforms, and the motivating factors for his political shifts. Looks at his complex relationship to his notion of aristocracy, and his drive to modernize Russian society. Finds many answers to these contradictions in the relationship between his domestic and foreign policies.
