ECSP Launches Blog on New Security Threats

FEBRUARY 2007—New Security Beat Provides Latest on Population, Environment, Security in the News

Security embodies much more than the traditional concerns of terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. For the past 13 years, ECSP has worked to redefine security to encompass environmental, ecological, and demographic issues. From population growth to water scarcity and degraded ecosystems, these crucial and timely issues are today's new security threats.

Yet, environmental security, despite its importance, is often misunderstood or misinterpreted. The connections linking issues of population growth, environment, and security are complex and not easily condensed into headlines or soundbites. Reporters and policymakers may not have the space or time to thoroughly connect the dots.

To flesh out these crucial connections, ECSP has launched The New Security Beat, a new blog providing frequent updates and commentary on the latest news stories and reports pertaining to environmental security. Contributors—currently staff members of ECSP–will grow to include guest commentators and scholars.

See our recent posts on the future of global water scarcity, development challenges in Liberia, the threats facing young girls gathering illegal wood in Ethiopia, the link between climate change and terrorism, and much more.

We invite you to link your blog or website to the New Security Beat or to suggest items for future posts. Please send any and all suggestions to ECSP.
