After Gitmo, What Next?: A European Perspective

September 02, 2009 // 12:00pm1:00pm

Seán Aylward, Secretary General, Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Republic of Ireland

While the Obama administration has ordered the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, European governments have been reluctant to accept any of the remaining inmates. Aylward will explore the legal and political issues which European governments would need to resolve in order to receive those currently incarcerated, as well as European thinking about how prisoners captured in counter-terrorism military operations will be handled in the post-Guantanamo era.
