Overview

On January 21, 2015, the Woodrow Wilson Center Africa Program hosted Dr. Adekeye Adebajo, author of “Africa’s Peacemakers: Nobel Peace Laureates of African Descent,” and contributing author Mr. Lee Daniels, for a panel discussion on the recently released book, which examines critical lessons on peacemaking, socio-economic justice, women’s rights, environmental protection, and nuclear disarmament from the 13 prominent individuals of African descent who have won the Nobel Peace Prize since 1950.

Moderating the panel was Dr. Monde Muyangwa, Director of the Wilson Center Africa Program, who highlighted the global nature of the struggle for peace and the contribution made by Dr. Adebajo in the promotion of a narrative of Africans as contributors to peace rather than simply consumers of it.

Dr. Adebajo offered a glimpse into the stories of each of the Nobel Laureates, highlighting both their accomplishments and flaws.

Mr. Daniels, who authored the chapter on Martin Luther King, Jr., outlined the significance of the Civil Rights Movement and King’s influential, timely role. As Mr. Daniels noted, the struggle for racial equality is an ongoing challenge, yet black Americans have the opportunity to be the nation’s symbol and tutors of democracy.

Turning to questions from the audience, the panelists responded to questions on religious/sectarian divides, the legacy of Barack Obama, and the labeling of the African continent.
