Morocco: A Stalled Democratization Process?

Speaker: Aboubakr Jamaï, Former Publisher of Le Journal Hebdomadaire (Casablanca)

Date & Time

Thursday
May. 1, 2008
12:00pm – 1:00pm ET

Overview

Speaker: Aboubakr Jamaï, Former Publisher of Le Journal Hebdomadaire (Casablanca)

Mr. Jamaï will discuss whether Morocco is on the path to democratization. Can a seemingly free electoral process, the reform of the women status law, and a formal recognition of the regime's past human right abuses amount to political liberalization? While civil society's vibrancy attests to the existence of the ingredients of democratization, is the power elite's engagement in favor of democratization dubious?
