Joaquín Díaz Mena

Joaquín Díaz Mena is the Morena candidate for the governorship of Yucatán. Born in San Felipe, Yucatán in 1975, he studied Tourism Business Administration at Instituto Tecnológico de Mérida. Joaquín has two master's degrees, one in Public Administration and Government and one in Urban and Regional Economics. During his career, he has taught at the Yucatán Ministry of Education and at the Colegio de Bachilleres de Yucatán, where he was also Director of the school. 

Regarding his public administration career, he was a delegate in Yucatán of the Secretary of Public Education. He was part of the Local Livestock Association of San Felipe, Yucatán and the National Union of Education Workers.

From 2001 until 2004, Díaz served as the Municipal President of San Felipe and from 2004 until 2006, Díaz was the local deputy representing the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN). From 2006 until 2009, he was a federal deputy representing the PAN. In 2009, then-president Felipe Calderón named Díaz a delegate to the Ministry of Education (SEP). From 2010 until 2012, Díaz served as a state and national advisor for the PAN. In 2012, Díaz unsuccessfully ran for the governorship of Yucatán. He attempted to participate in the 2018 gubernatorial elections as the PAN candidate, but internal strife within the party made his candidacy not possible. That same year, Díaz officially left the PAN to join Morena, ultimately running for the governorship as the Morena candidate. Díaz lost the election, but López Obrador later appointed him State Coordinator of Development Programs for the State of Yucatán.
