Overview

On Sunday, November 19, Finance Minister Sergio Massa will compete against libertarian lawmaker Javier Milei in the second round of Argentina’s presidential election. While the primary concern for voters is the economy, foreign policy has emerged as a key campaign issue, given the significant differences between the candidates regarding Argentina’s international relationships.

Massa has adopted a traditional foreign policy platform, promoting continued strong ties to both the United States and China, and signaling a commitment to the Mercosur trade bloc. Massa has strong ties in Washington and New York City and experience negotiating with the International Monetary Fund. He has sharply criticized Milei’s proposed diplomatic distancing from China and Brazil, warning of the high costs for Argentina’s economy.

To gain a deeper understanding of Massa’s foreign policy priorities, please join the Wilson Center’s Latin America Program on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 10 am to 11 am ET for a virtual dialogue with Gustavo Martínez Pandiani, Massa’s senior foreign policy adviser and Argentina’s ambassador to Switzerland.

This event is part of the Latin America Program’s “Argentina Elige” series of conversations with senior advisers to major candidates in Argentina’s election. It is co-sponsored by McLarty Associates.
