Rubio Embarks on Diplomatic Mission to Central America

Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s upcoming diplomatic mission to Central America reflects the US focus on addressing critical regional issues, including migration, security, and the growing influence of China. With Panama as a key stop, Rubio aims to navigate tensions surrounding the Panama Canal and its management, amid concerns over Chinese investments and US strategic interests. Immigration also remains at the forefront of the agenda, as Rubio seeks commitments from regional leaders to enhance border security, stem migrant flows through key transit routes like the Darién Gap, and foster cooperative solutions to the economic and social drivers of migration.

Ben Gedan, Director of the Latin America Program, provides an overview of Rubio’s upcoming trip. He talks about the rarity of a Secretary of State prioritizing Latin America for their first trip abroad, the uncertainty over whether Rubio will push for US control of the Panama Canal, the current state of relations with Guatemala and El Salvador, and increased tensions spurred on by tariff and deportation threats.
