Full Biography
Ambassador Cardenas--a lawyer, law professor, writer, and diplomat--is from Buenos Aires, Argentina. After graduating from the University of Buenos Aires Law School, he received a Master's degree from the University of Michigan Law School and carried out further studies at Princeton and at the University of California/Berkeley. He spent many years in private law practice in Buenos Aires, and he also taught law at the University of Buenos Aires, Catholic University of Argentina, and the University of Illinois. In 1992, Emilio Cardenas was appointed as Argentina's Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he was assigned to a number of significant posts. He held a concurrent appointment as Argentina's Ambassador to Dominica and Guyana. In October 2002, Ambassador Cardenas was elected President of the International Bar Association for 2003-2005 period. He has been a member of the Board of Editors of The Journal of International Economic Law, Oxford University, since 2000.
