Wilson Center Project
"Globalization, Transnational Feminist Networks, and Public Policy"
Project Summary
Transnational feminist networks (TFNs) are research, lobbying, and advocacy structures organized above and across national boundaries that unite women from three or more countries around a common agenda typically focused on human rights or economic policy issues. I examine six such networks in terms of their origins, organizational structures, objectives, and main activities, links to other networks, interaction with national and intergovernmental organizations, and influence on public policy. In addition to collecting interview and documentary data on the TFNs, I theorize the relationship between globalization and transnational feminist networks, and analyze the way that such women's organizations respond to global processes and (re)define rights. In so doing I elaborate on a relatively under-researched aspect of "globalization-from-below" and "global civil society."
