Project Summary

A case study of the formative period for the Brezhnev era, noting Soviet policy towards the United States during the years of Nikita Khrushchev. Compares Western and Soviet explanations and reviews the historical record in order to determine the sources of change and contradictions in Soviet foreign policy towards the US, thus illuminating the détente/cold war simultaneous presence under Khrushchev, Brezhnev and Gorbachev.
