AfPak File: Iran's Chabahar Port Development: Significance and Implications

In 2016, Iran, India, and Afghanistan signed a deal to develop the port of Chabahar in southern Iran and to build a transport corridor into Afghanistan. In recent days, the project marked a major milestone, with Afghanistan sending off its first shipment of exports to India via Chabahar.

What is the significance of the Chabahar project, and what does it mean for the three countries, for the broader region, and for the United States?
