Clara Brugada Molina
Clara Brugada Molina is the Sigamos Haciendo Historia en la CDMX (Let's Continue to Make History in Mexico City) coalition candidate for the Head of Government of Mexico City. Born in Mexico City in 1963, Brugada holds a degree in Economics from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM). Though Brugada’s involvement in politics can be traced back to her teenage years when she participated in citizen movements focused on improving living conditions, her first formal political venture came in the 1990s. She joined the Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD) and in 1995 and ran for the position of Citizen Councilor representing San Miguel Teotongo in Iztapalapa. Two years later, the PRD nominated Brugada for federal deputy for District 22 (Sierra de Santa Catarina). From 2000 until 2003, Brugada served as a local deputy in the Legislative Assembly of the Federal District (ALDF). She was subsequently elected as a federal deputy for Mexico City’s District 25, a post she held until 2006.
In 2009, Brugada participated in the PRD’s internal elections for the mayorship of Iztapalapa, which she won by a significant margin. However, her opponent challenged the results of the election process before the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation (TEPJF), which annulled Brugada's designation as a candidate. However, Brugada’s name was already printed on the ballot, meaning that she could not withdraw from the race. Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), Mexico’s current president, promised to support the Partido del Trabajo (PT) candidate, Rafael Acosta Ángeles, with the condition that, if he won the elections in Iztapalapa, he would decline in favor of Clara Brugada. After a few days of campaigning, Acosta won the election as Mayor of Iztapalapa and, under the position, appointed Clara Brugada as Director of Legal and Government Affairs. In December 2009, Acosta supported Clara Brugada as his replacement. Upon the conclusion of her term in 2012, Brugada resigned from the PRD, and in 2014, she joined Morena. She was elected Secretary of Welfare of the National Executive Committee of Morena, and in 2016, she was elected Deputy and Vice President of the Constituent Assembly of Mexico City.
In 2018, Brugada served her second term as Mayor of Iztapalapa and was reelected to a third term in 2021. Her administration has carried out various projects such as the construction of Line 2 of the Cablebus (the elevated Trolleybus Line), community mural projects, the establishment of twelve cultural centers called "Utopias," and improvements in public lighting.
