ANCSA at 50 Event Series
2021 marks 50 years since the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act was passed. Twelve land-based Alaska Native regional corporations were created pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971, and compose the membership of ANCSA Regional Association (ARA). Approximately 200 Alaska Native village corporations were also formed, and contribute to the membership of the Alaska Native Village Corporation Association (ANVCA).
Through coordination with ARA and ANVCA, the Polar Institute is pleased to host a series of programs that contextualize the creation and relevance of Alaska Native corporations in the Arctic region of the United States and beyond. These discussions will feature multiple generations of Alaska Native voices and their perspectives on the unique role Alaska Native Corporations, created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, play in providing critical services and resources to Indigenous communities throughout the state.
