With foreign combat troops now out of Afghanistan, the country faces a deeply uncertain future. Afghanistan: The Next Phase takes an in-depth look at Afghanistan by placing it in the context of its tribal culture, history, and demography. With the troop withdrawal expected to lead to reduced flows of foreign capital, the book also analyzes Afghanistan’s economic future. Afghanistan: The Next Phase proposes a formal association of 10 to 12 countries to help chaperone the country into the future. Without this arrangement, the book argues, Afghanistan could once again become a failed state. This book event, which will take place on a week when Afghan President Ashraf Ghani is visiting Washington, will underscore the continued strategic importance of Afghanistan for the United States and the world on the whole.
