Americans in China : Navigating the Personal and Political in the Cold War and Engagement Eras
Overview
In Americans in China: Encounters with the People's Republic (Oxford, 2022), author Terry Lautz tells the stories of Americans who have lived and worked in China from the start of its revolution to the present. Through the successes and failures of U.S. cold warriors, diplomats, reporters, soldiers, scientists, business people, and scholars, Lautz traces the history of modern China and illuminates America’s many roles in China’s development. He also reveals the myriad ways that China has influenced the United States during past decades and the reasons that many Chinese and Americans have been disappointed by both countries as relations deteriorate.
Please join us for an afternoon of storytelling and analysis in the spirit of Jonathan Spence’s To Change China: Western Advisers to China.
