Farming Forward: Strategic Approaches to Sustainable Agriculture
A private dialogue with Silvia Maria Fonseca Silveira Massruhá, President of Embrapa, and Roberto Perosa, Brazil's Secretary of Commerce and International Relations (MAPA)
Overview
The Wilson Center’s Brazil Institute will host an event in Washington, DC, on September 20th, 2024, at 4 pm - 5 pm, featuring Silvia Maria Fonseca Silveira Massruhá, President of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), and Roberto Perosa, Brazil's Secretary of Commerce and International Relations at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA). This meeting will explore groundbreaking innovations in sustainable agriculture and their critical role in enhancing climate resilience. It is also an opportunity to gain valuable insights into MAPA's strategic approaches and international collaborations aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
This event also marks the launch of the Wilson Center’s Latin America Sustainable Agriculture Initiative, which aims to foster sustainable food production across the Americas. The initiative seeks to bolster global food security while encouraging hemispheric cooperation and mitigating environmental impacts such as deforestation and carbon and methane emissions. Given that Brazil and the United States together produce a quarter of the world’s food, their collaboration is vital.
In partnership with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Wilson Center’s initiative supports the development of advanced agricultural technologies and the formulation of public policies that incentivize investment in sustainable practices. The Wilson Center achieves this by conducting independent research, producing knowledge, and promoting programs that connect academia and policy, as well as serving as a meeting point for key policymakers, scholars, and private sector representatives committed to sustainable agriculture.
