"Korean Unification and Peace in Northeast Asia:" A Conversation with Former Republic of Korea Minister of Unification Dr. Kihljae Ryoo

North Korea shocked the world on September 9th with its fifth and largest nuclear test, in defiance of U.N. sanctions. North Korea’s flagrant disregard for the international community’s calls to abandon its nuclear and ballistic missile programs set the stage for a new round of heightened tensions on the divided Korean peninsula and raised tensions in the region and beyond. On Monday, September 19th, former Minister of Unification, Dr. Kihljae Ryoo, will discuss recent developments in North Korea, shifts in policies toward the DPRK, inter-Korean relations, and prospects for peace and cooperation in Northeast Asia.

Overview

Dr. Kihljae Ryoo, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, served as the Republic of Korea’s Minister of Unification from March 2013 to February 2015. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Ryoo also served as Policy Advisor to the Ministry of Unification (2009-2013), Standing Member of the National Unification Advisory Council (2003-2005, 2009-2011), and Policy Advisor for the President on Foreign Affairs and National Security (2008-2011). He earned his Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in political science from Korea University. Dr. Ryoo was a Fellow with the Wilson Center in 2007 and again in 2010.
