Overview

Malta took over as Chair of the Organization on Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on January 1, 2024.  Join us for a conversation with Malta’s Foreign Minister, Ian Borg, for a look at the vital role of the OSCE and its 57 participating states in Europe today.  How is the OSCE contributing to stability in the region, even as Russia’s war in Ukraine challenges our threat perception?  How can the OSCE’s tools help its members remain resilient?  What is the future of the OSCE as it approaches the 50th anniversary of the Helsinki Final Act in 2025, and how can we shape it to meet unforeseen crises? What are Malta’s priorities for its time as Chair-in-Office?

Join us for a fireside conversation with the OSCE Chair-in-Office, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Ian Borg, and Ambassador David T. Johnson, former US Ambassador to the OSCE, about the OSCE’s unique role and potential as a critical part of Europe’s security architecture.

Hosted By

Global Europe Program

The Global Europe Program is focused on Europe’s capabilities, and how it engages on critical global issues.  We investigate European approaches to critical global issues. We examine Europe’s relations with Russia and Eurasia, China and the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Our initiatives include “Ukraine in Europe” – an examination of what it will take to make Ukraine’s European future a reality.  But we also examine the role of NATO, the European Union and the OSCE, Europe’s energy security, transatlantic trade disputes, and challenges to democracy. The Global Europe Program’s staff, scholars-in-residence, and Global Fellows participate in seminars, policy study groups, and international conferences to provide analytical recommendations to policy makers and the media.  Read more
