The Woodrow Wilson Center’s Brazil Institute and the Inter-American Dialogue are pleased to invite you to participate in a discussion on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s visit to Washington later this month.

Two years ago Edward Snowden’s exposure of U.S. spying on Brazil, including on the president herself, caused Rousseff to call off a scheduled state visit to Washington and badly shook the U.S.-Brazilian relationship, which has since remained cool and distant. Now both the U.S. and Brazil have put the Snowden affair behind them, and have started working toward a new, revitalized bond between the two nations. The visit is particularly important for Brazil, which is now in the midst of a sharp economic downturn, a huge political corruption scandal, and a potential governance crisis.  Narrowly re-elected last October, Rousseff has seen her public approval ratings plummet and many in Brazil have called for her impeachment. For the embattled Brazilian leader, the trip to Washington will be a prime opportunity to bolster U.S.-Brazilian economic ties, a central U.S. objective as well, and help restore investor confidence in the country’s troubled economy, as she attempts to rebuild her own political standing.

Our featured speakers will include former U.S. Ambassador to Brazil Donna Hrinak, currently the President of Boeing Latin America, and Kellie Meiman Hock, Managing Partner at McLarty Associates, who will be joining us from São Paulo. Other speakers include Senior Vice President of the Albright Stonebridge Group Joel Velasco, Inter-American Dialogue President Emeritus Peter Hakim and Brazil Institute Director Paulo Sotero.

The Brazil Institute plays this role by producing independent research and programs that bridge the gap between scholarship and policy, and by serving as a crossroads for leading policymakers, scholars and private sector representatives who are committed to addressing Brazil’s challenges and opportunities.  Read more
