Leroy Seafood Group PipeFarm Trial

Project Description

Proposal to build three trial farms on the coast of Norway, including a salmon farm in Troms. The new concept is called a 'pipefarm', which creates a current that simulates the effects of a river, making fish healthier and cleaner, Leroy hopes to reduce illness and salmon lice. Location of the pipefarms were proposed in the following regions: Fjord site in Hordaland County, Sagen in Samnanger Municipality with the focus on trout (sheltered fjord system) – in cooperation with Leroy Vest AS. Open coastal site in Mid-Norway with the focus on salmon (waves, currents, wind in typical open site) – in cooperation with Leroy Midt AS. Arctic waters in counties of Troms /Finnmark with the focus on salmon (Cold temperatures / challenges concerning ice forming around the constructions, and utilization of temperate deep water in fjord waters). Leroy Aurora AS. The Fisheries Directorate writes that the cost is set against the value that a possible conversion of the development licences [to permanent licences] will represent for Lerøy, and after the assessment it only sees it "necessary" to grant one permit of 450 tonnes of maximum permitted biomass.
