The History and Public Policy Program invites applications for Chun and Jane Chiu Family Foundation Research grants in Taiwan studies, a program designed to support timely historical research on modern Taiwan.
Recipients will receive a funding award ranging from $3,000 to $9,000 USD, depending on the number of grants awarded and based on the merits of the individual proposals. The funds may be flexibly utilized by recipients during the summer and/or fall of 2025 as long as they are for purposes legitimately connected to the research project outlined in the original proposal.
The Wilson Center does not request any financial reporting following the conclusion of the grant, but does expect a brief narrative summary of what was accomplished as a result of the fellowship. Recipients are also also expected to share some of their findings and work with the Wilson Center and the broader academic community through a blog post(s) for the Sources & Methods blog soon after concluding research.
Researchers working on projects related to Taiwan's post-1949 foreign relations, economic transformation, and political transformation are especially encouraged to apply. Researchers working on other time periods or topics in Taiwan’s history are still welcome to apply.
We are particularly interested in receiving applications from historians, historically-minded researchers, and others whose research has a strong archival dimension to it.
Applicants must have received a doctorate in their field of study or be currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program. Applications from M.A. students will not be accepted.
Applicants should submit a brief cover email, CV, and proposal that introduces the research project and its significance and explains how the fellowship will support the project (2-3 pages) to Charles.Kraus@wilsoncenter.org with the subject line “Taiwan Fellowship Application”. The application deadline is March 16, 2025, by 11:59 EST.
The History and Public Policy Program and its external advisors will commence a review of all applications at that time with the goal of announcing the results within 30 days.
Questions prior to the deadline may be directed to Charles.Kraus@wilsoncenter.org.
The fellowships are generously supported by the Chun and Jane Chiu Family Foundation and administered by the History and Public Policy Program at the Wilson Center.
