Where the East Meets the West: A Landscape of Familiar Strangers, Missionary Alaska, 1794-1898
Project Summary
This project examines the cross-cultural exchange, both oppositional and friendly, between the Native American, Russian, American, British and Spanish inhabitants entrepanuers and missionaries during the period 1794-1898. Krivonosov attempts to reconstitute the religious and cultural character in the interactions in the Christain missions to Alaska, comparing their successes and failures. Another aspect is an investigation into the changing notions of civilization as tied to Christianity.
