Full Biography

Antonio “Tony” Garrastazu is the International Republican Institute Senior Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. He oversees programs in over 20 countries focused on governance, legislative strengthening, political inclusion, and election integrity. With more than 20 years of international experience, he has led diverse business, government, and academic programs.

Before his current role, Tony was the Center for Global Impact Director at IRI, contributing to democratic development and global initiatives. From 2011-2018, he managed programs in Central America, Haiti, and Mexico, focusing on anti-corruption, security, rule of law, and local governance. Before joining IRI, Tony worked at Globalvia Infrastructures, implementing public-private partnerships in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. He also held leadership roles at the Spain-United States Chamber of Commerce and the Dante B. Fascell North-South Center. From 2002-2007, he was the Deputy Director for International Affairs at the Florida Office of Tourism, Trade, and Economic Development, organizing trade missions and overseeing international initiatives. He also worked on international development in Paraguay.

Tony has published extensively. He holds a BS degree in History and Political Science from the University of Florida and a master’s and Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Miami.
