Ariel Ahram

Ariel I. Ahram is professor and chair of the government and international affairs program in Virginia Tech's School of Public and International Affairs in Arlington.  He is also an associate researcher at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). Ahram earned a Ph.D. in government and MA in Arab studies from Georgetown University, where he won the Howard N. Glassman Distinguished Dissertation Award, was a graduate fellow at the Center for Democracy and Civil Society and received grants from the Boren National Security Education Program grant and Title VI Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Program.  He earned his BA summa cum laude from Brandeis University. Ahram’s research has appeared in top scholarly journals and influential policy outlets in the world.  He has consulted to multiple US government agencies and the World Bank and testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.  Ahram co-directs the Proxy Wars Initiative, a project sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation aimed to devise new policies for conflict resolution and mitigation in the Middle East, with Dr. Ranj Alaaldin.
