Expert Bio

A native of Ankara, Turkey, Barın KayaoÄŸlu joined AUIS as an assistant professor of world history in 2016. After spending parts of his childhood in Iraq and Lebanon, he graduated from Bilkent University  in 2001 with a degree in political science, and PhD in history from the University of Virginia (UVA) in 2014. A teacher of more than 15 years, Barın's research focuses on the history of U.S. foreign relations, modern Middle East history, development, and international political economy. Aside from his academic work, Barın has worked as a writer, editor, analyst, and business consultant in Washington, D.C., and he continues to write commentaries for global media outlets such as Al-Monitor and The National Interest. Barın is currently finishing his first book, based on his doctoral dissertation at UVA, on U.S. relations with Turkey and Iran from World War II to the present and pro- and anti-American sentiments in the two countries.
