Expert Bio

José Alberto Balbuena is a lawyer and professor specializing in financial and economic intelligence, financial and administrative regulation, and public and private frameworks for the prevention of and fight against money laundering and financing of terrorism. He was co-coordinator of the Compliance Committee of the Mexican Banking Association. Mr. Balbuena was also head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit from 2011 to 2013. He also served as the representative of the finance ministry in Washington, D.C. Mr. Balbuena also held various positions in the Federal Attorney General's Office (Procuraduría Fiscal de la Federación).
