Study of the U.S.-Philippines Military Base Negotiations in 1955-1956

Project Summary

For the historical facts in the US-Philippine military negotiations, such as discussion of the question of land re-delimitation, base jurisdiction issues and the use of military bases which are no longer used as old bases for US military bases, in the Philippine-Philippine relationship group. Those are not only the core of the 1956 military base negotiations, but also the biggest reason why the United States and the Philippines cannot reach the consensus. The Philippines kept a firm stand  in the negotiations on these three issues which reflect the Philippine people protest against the United States trampling on the Philippine sovereignty. Most scholars' studies focused on the relationship between the United States and the Philippines, but they have ignored the divergence between the United States and the Philippines. This study may expose both US’s and Philippine’s consideration toward the military and analyze the causes of the contradictions.
