The Wilson Center Africa Program and the Social Science Research Council’s African Peacebuilding Network and Next Generation Social Science in Africa program recently convened current and former government officials, academics, and thought leaders to discuss trends in democratic governance in relation to US-Africa relations. This report derives from the first in a series of discussions focused on critical themes in US-Africa relations within an evolving geopolitical context. The discussion provided research-informed policy options in response to these trends, presented here as five strategic areas of focus to inform the incoming Trump administration's democracy agenda for Africa.

Africa Program

The Africa Program works to address the most critical issues facing Africa and US-Africa relations, build mutually beneficial US-Africa relations, and enhance knowledge and understanding about Africa in the United States. The Program achieves its mission through in-depth research and analyses, public discussion, working groups, and briefings that bring together policymakers, practitioners, and subject matter experts to analyze and offer practical options for tackling key challenges in Africa and in US-Africa relations.   Read more
